Proverbs: Wisdom for our Digital Age

Before You Begin

Alpha starts Monday, October 27.

Take a few minutes at the start of your group to:

  • Ask: Is there anyone you could invite?

  • Pray for open doors, courage, and for those who might come — that they would encounter Jesus.

READ PROVERB 4:20-25

My son, be attentive to my words;

incline your ear to my sayings.

Let them not escape from your sight;

keep them within your heart.

For they are life to those who find them,

and healing to all their flesh.

Keep your heart with all vigilance,

for from it flow the springs of life.

Put away from you crooked speech,

and put devious talk far from you.

Let your eyes look directly forward,

and your gaze be straight before you.

DISCUSS:

1. What stands out to you in this passage?

2. What is the connection between attention and the heart?

3. How might this passage describe the impact of what we constantly look at and listen to online?

4. Luke 6:45 says,

“Out of the abundance of the heart his mouth speaks.”

How does what comes out of us — our words, reactions and behavours — reflect what’s going on inside us?

5. The proverb calls us to “keep your heart with all vigilance.” What might vigilance look like in the digital age?

6. In your experience, how has social media or online life:

  • Fed envy or comparison?

  • Fuelled anger or outrage?

  • Distracted or dulled your attention to what’s good and true?

7. 2 Corinthians 3:18 describes how beholding the glory of the Lord transforms us into His image.
What does this teach us about the positive power of attention — where we fix our gaze? How have you seen yourself change in light of focusing on God and his character?

8. Philippians 4:8–9 calls us to think about what is true, honorable, just, pure, lovely, commendable, excellent, and praiseworthy.
-
What kinds of things (online or offline) fit that description?
- How can you intentionally give more attention to these this week?

9. What practical steps could you take this week to guard your heart and limit unhealthy inputs?

10. How could we, as a group, encourage one another in this — rather than just trying to do it alone? In particular how can we be encouraging one another to fix our focus on Jesus?

Spend some time in prayer in light of what you have discussed.
