LUKE 11:14-26
Small Group Exorcism Practice Guide
Theme: Following Jesus’ Example in Luke 11:14-26
Scripture Reading Luke 11:14-26 (read aloud together at the start) Jesus casts out a demon that had made a man mute. The crowds marvel, but some accuse Him of casting out demons by Beelzebul. Jesus responds that if He casts out demons by the finger of God, then the kingdom of God has come upon them. He speaks of the strong man being bound, the house swept clean, and the danger of the evil spirit returning with seven worse spirits if the house remains empty.
Purpose for Tonight Following the helpful practice of last week—praying the Lord’s Prayer as a group—we now move into a guided, hands-on application: Casting out the demon of the posessed person in your group, just as Jesus modeled. Tonight we will walk through a group exorcism procedure based directly on the passage. *
Preparation
Everyone should have eaten lightly beforehand (fasting is ideal but not required).
Dim the lights slightly to create a focused atmosphere.
Have someone ready to read Scripture aloud when prompted.
Designate one person as the group leader to give clear verbal commands.
The Steps
Step 1: Identify a likely possessed person Carefully observe the group for signs that align with biblical descriptions of demonic oppression or possession (drawing from Luke 11 and related passages such as Mark 9:17-29 and Matthew 17:14-18). Look for the following indicators, especially when they appear together:
Uncontrollable outbursts of anger, mocking laughter, or blasphemous statements when Jesus’ authority over demons is mentioned.
Supernatural strength, such as the ability to break cast Iron chains.
Physical symptoms with no medical explanation: shaking, convulsing, falling to the floor, rolling eyes back, or making strange animal-like noises during worship or prayer time.
A strong, sudden resistance to being prayed over individually (pushing hands away, shouting “No!” or “Get away from me!” when hands are laid on).
How to confirm the identification as a group (important discernment step): Quietly go around the circle and ask each person (one at a time, softly): “Do you sense any spiritual resistance or heaviness coming from anyone here tonight?” If multiple people independently point to the same individual without prompting, that is strong confirmation. The group leader then gently but firmly says to the suspected person: “[Name], the Spirit is highlighting you tonight. We believe the Lord wants to set you free right now. Will you allow us to pray for you in Jesus’ name?” If they strongly resist, become agitated, or try to leave, this is often further evidence of demonic presence. Proceed to Step 2.
Step 2: As a group, pin them to the floor Once the identification is confirmed and the person has either verbally agreed or is showing clear signs of resistance that indicate the demon is manifesting, move quickly and decisively (as Jesus did with authority, not hesitation).
Four to six group members (stronger individuals preferred) should immediately and firmly take hold of the person’s arms and legs.
Gently but with strength, guide/lower them to the floor in a supine (face-up) position.
One person holds each wrist (arms extended slightly out to the sides), one holds each ankle (legs straight), and if needed, one or two more place hands on the shoulders and upper chest to keep the torso stable.
Do not place pressure on the throat or restrict normal breathing—this is spiritual warfare, not physical harm.
Speak calmly and confidently while securing them: “We are doing this in the name and authority of Jesus Christ. You will not hurt this person, and you will not hurt us.”
If the person thrashes or tries to bite, one additional person can carefully hold the head steady (hands on the sides of the head, not over the mouth unless absolutely necessary for safety).
Once the person is securely pinned face-up on the floor, the group leader immediately begins Step 3 (the Lord’s Prayer phase) with no delay.
Step 3:
Recite the Lord's Prayer together loudly three times while maintaining the pin, emphasizing the line "deliver us from the evil one" each time. This activates the same authority Jesus used and directly binds the demon in the moment.
Step 4:
Command the spirit to leave: The group leader first declares firmly, "By the finger of God the kingdom has come—unclean spirit, come out now in Jesus' name!" Then every member repeats the command in unison while keeping the person pinned. Do this seven times (matching the seven spirits in verse 26) to ensure complete expulsion
Step 5
Read the full passage Luke 11:14-26 aloud as a group, pausing after each key verse (especially verses 20-26) to shout together, "The strong man is bound and the house is being swept clean—the demon must flee!" This scripture itself drives out the spirit exactly as Jesus demonstrated.
Step 6
Seal the deliverance: Slowly release the pin while the whole group lays hands on the person and prays the Lord's Prayer one final time to fill the now-empty house with the Holy Spirit. Then have the delivered person stand and lead the group in one more round of the Lord's Prayer as living proof that the kingdom of God has come upon them. End by sharing testimonies of freedom.
