Discussion Questions

  1. What stands out to you most in this passage? Is there anything that surprises you or raises questions?

  2. In verses 3–4 Jesus tells the disciples to go without money bag, knapsack, or sandals. Why might Jesus instruct them not to bring supplies? What might this teach them about the mission?

  3. In verse 2 Jesus says, “The harvest is plentiful, but the laborers are few. Therefore pray earnestly to the Lord of the harvest…” In what ways does prayer foster dependence on God rather than ourselves?

  4. In verses 7–8 Jesus tells them to stay in one house and to eat and drink what is provided. How might sharing meals and accepting hospitality help the mission of the gospel? Have you seen this reality at play in your own life?

  5. What does this passage teach us about the hostility or rejection that followers of Jesus may face when sharing the gospel?

  6. What encouragements does Jesus give the disciples about the support and authority they will have in the mission? Which of these are you most likely to forget?

Applying the Passage

  1. What do you think Jesus might be calling you to do differently in light of this passage?

  2. Where in your life might God be inviting you to depend on him more deeply rather than relying on your own resources or security?

  3. Is there a step of faith, perhaps sharing your faith, inviting someone to church, or building relationships, that feels difficult but that Jesus might be prompting you to try?

Ask God to help you depend on him, give you courage when it feels hard, and prepare the hearts of those around you to receive the good news of Jesus.
