LUKE - WEEK 9
Pray
Begin your time by praying for open and soft hearts. To be receiving God’s words and convictions with with humility.
Read Luke 6:43-49
Read through twice in two different versions. Close you bibles and retell the story in your own words.
Following the first parable- what might good fruit and bad fruit look like?
How do you grapple with these verses (43-45) in light of Luke 6:41-42 which it is immediately following on from?
The second parable implies that our obedience is certainly required when we follow Jesus. We are to “be doers of the word, and not hearers only, deceiving yourselves” (James 1:22). Why is it important to bear fruit at all?
What warnings do you perceive Jesus is giving in this passage?
What do these passages show about Jesus’ authority?
"But the one who hears my words and does not put them into practice is like a man who built a house on the ground without a foundation.” What are the “words” and teachings that come to mind when thinking of building a firm foundation? (be specific and point to different scriptures and promises)
Reflection & Application:
(In pairs) Reflect on your past week/year so far: What do your words and actions reveal about you and your heart?
In light of this passage what do you think God is calling you to apply/change in your life. What is he convicting you of?
Pray
Read and reflect on this prayer/poem by Charles Spurgeon. Then pray that God would be making us into a people who are living out of our heart transformation. Being doers of the word.
My God, I mark with fear
How many hopes decay,
And like the foolish builder’s house
Fall in the trial day.
Perhaps amid this throng
Thou dost a soul espy
Whose towering hopes are built on sand,
I ask, “Lord, is it I?”
A thousand doubts arise,
I bring them all to thee;
Am I unconsciously deceived?
Lord, search my heart and see.
O teach me deep to dig
Down to the solid rock,
That when tornadoes round me sweep
My house may bear the shock.
Jesus, thou only art
The sure foundation stone,
Firm as th’ eternal hills art thou,
I build on thee alone.
Cemented fast to thee
No stone is laid in vain,
My hope defies th’ assaults of hell
The flood, the wind, the rain.
