LUKE - WEEK 6
Leaders Note:
Before beginning this week spend some time praying. That God would be preparing all hearts to hear his words.
Below is a prayer made from various Psalms. Invite your group to close their eyes. Sit in silence for 1 minute. Then read these words
Oh Lord
Open my eyes, that I may behold wondrous things out of your law.
Make me understand the way of your precepts, and I will meditate on your wondrous works.
Put false ways far from me and graciously teach me your law!
Lead me in the path of your commandments, for I delight in it.
Incline my heart to your testimonies, and not to selfish gain!
Turn my eyes from looking at worthless things; and give me life in your ways.
Read Luke 5:33-6:11
Before reading the passage ask the first question for people to ponder as you read Luke.
What are all the specific criticisms leveled against Jesus in this passage?
What is the context of Jesus' interaction with the Pharisees and scribes in Luke 5:33-39? How does this set the stage for the rest of the passage?
What are all this things Jesus proclaims about himself throughout these three interactions? Again be specific
Throughout this passage Jesus boldly claims that he is bringing about something new. And this new way cannot be combined with the old.
What does Jesus expose/ unearth in the Pharisees that makes them so uncomfortable?
Why is legalism such an attractive teaching to many?
If Jesus has brought about a new covenant, are followers of Jesus required to fast and keep the Sabbath today?
Read Revelation 21:1-6
How does the vision of the new heaven and new earth in Revelation 21:1-6 inspire or challenge you?
Reflection & Application:
Jesus has secured an eternal redemption for all who trust in his name. The old has passed away and the new is here. What good news! The reality is also we live in the “now” and “not yet”.
Take a few moments to reflect on these questions and share with a partner. What truth or insight can you take away tonight that might:
Bring hope or comfort to someone who is struggling with grief, loss, or loneliness?
Encourage someone who is feeling the impact of sin or brokenness in their life?
Spur you on to greater faith or perseverance in the midst of challenges or difficulties?
