LUKE - WEEK 5
Leaders Note:
This week we are looking at 4 stories that each show Jesus authority over various domains, while often read as stand-alone stories, together they paint a portrait of Jesus Character, both in his authority and in his compassion for the sick and spiritually lost. Reading them all as a block, but then looking at each story one by one with a couple of brief discussion questions will hopefully allow us to get a sense of what Luke is trying to show. The key takeaway is that we would recognise Jesus authority and respond to him in humble submission.
Read Luke 5:1-32
Luke 5:1-11 (The Miraculous catch)
How does Simon Peter respond when he sees the miraculous catch (v. 8)? Why?
Why do you think humility and a recognition of sinfulness are tied to recognising Jesus’ true nature?
Peter is called to become a fisher of men. How should the miraculous catch of fish bolster Peter’s confidence in this new endeavour?
Luke 5:12-16 (Healing the Leper)
4. What does the leper’s request in v. 12 reveal about his understanding of Jesus’ authority?
5. How does Jesus demonstrate both his authority and his compassion in healing the leper?
Luke 5:17-26 (Healing & Forgiving the Paralysed Man)
6. What is surprising about Jesus’ first words to the paralysed man (v. 20)?
7. How do the Pharisees react to Jesus forgiving sins?
8. What does their reaction reveal about their understanding of Jesus’ authority?
Luke 5:27-32 (The dinner with Levi)
9. Why is it significant that Jesus calls a tax collector like Levi to follow him?
10. What does Levi’s immediate response (leaving everything) tell us about how he views Jesus?
Final Reflection & Application:
11. In which areas of life do you struggle to submit to Jesus’ authority?
12. Do you see yourself as being called to the work of being a ‘fisher of men’? Why/ why not?
13. What would it look like for you to live an outward looking life with compassion and intentionality for those who might be seen as outcast/ unclean/ too sinful as you live a life of imitation to Jesus?
