LUKE - WEEK 2
Overview
Tonight we are looking at two passages set in the temple that Luke uses summarise Jesus’ infancy and childhood. These passages are set at two key milestones, one at day 8, (the day of circumcision) and one at 12 years old (the final year of preparation for manhood in Jewish culture). Over these two passages we see Jesus growing as a faithful adherent to the law, as well as his unique mission and identity being revealed both by faithful people of God, and ultimate by Jesus himself.
Read Luke 2:22-40
Verse 24 mentions a sacrifice of “a pair of doves or two young pigeons.” (Compare with Leviticus 12:8.) What does this detail reveal about their social status?
Why was it was important for Jesus to be dedicated at the temple?
How does Simon describe Jesus in verses 29-32? What do these words reveal about Jesus’ mission?
In verses 34-35, Simeon speaks of Jesus being a sign that will be “opposed” and that He will reveal hearts. What do you think this means?
How does verse 40 help us understand both Jesus’ humanity and divinity?
How do Simeon and Anna’s examples challenge us to trust in God’s promises?
Read Luke 2:41-51
What was Jesus doing in the temple, and how did people respond to Him? (v. 46-47)
What does Jesus’ answer in v. 49 reveal about how Jesus viewed himself?
How do Mary and Joseph react to Jesus’ words? Why do you think they struggle to understand?
Why is it significant that Jesus continued in obedience to his earthly parents?
How do these two temple experiences serve to qualify Jesus to ultimately carry out his mission of salvation?
Apply:

How does God’s fulfilment of his promises to send a saviour encourage you through periods of patience and waiting?
Pray.
