Luke 19:11-27 - The Ten Minas
Leaders Notes:
1) As we begin the year together, our main goals for this first week are simple: to catch up, hear how the summer has been, and then to look ahead using the Parable of the Ten Minas, thinking about the gospel opportunities God might place before us this year. One way to approach the week would be to use the meal-time intentionally to go around the group, and have each person briefly share for each of the three categories, and having this be a seperate time to the main Bible discussion.
2) The parable is one that is slightly less familiar, Jesus tells this parable as he nears Jerusalem because many people expected God’s kingdom to appear immediately. The nobleman represents Jesus, who will go away and later return as king. While he is away, his servants are each entrusted with the same gift and told to “engage in business until I come.” The parable explores how his followers respond in the time between his departure and return and what faithfulness looks like while we wait.
1) Catch Up
Take time to reconnect and share how the summer has been, maybe to use some of these questions or choose some of your own.
Highlight of summer break:
What’s something you enjoyed or are thankful for since we last met together?
Something you’ve been encouraged by or learnt:
In what way has God encouraged you or taught you something over the summer?
A challenge you’ve been facing:
What’s something you’ve found challenging over the last little while or are carrying into this year?
Have one or two people pray for what has been shared.
2) The Parable of the Minas
Read Luke 19:11-27
Understanding the Parable
What stands out to you in this parable?
Who do you think each character in the parable represents?
How do the faithful servants view the master differently from the fearful servant?
What does the reaction of the master reveal about what God values?
What does the master’s response suggest about what he values most from his servants?
Applying the Parable
What are some of the time, money, abilities, relationships, or opportunities God has entrusted to you that could be used to grow the kingdom?
Where do you notice a temptation toward playing it safe rather than trusting God?
How does the reality of Jesus’ return shape how you should think about how you use what you’ve been given?
What is one gospel risk God might be calling you to take this year?
Pray for what has been shared as well as any other prayer points.
